Rathangan attracts numerous anglers to it's fine stretches of water. There is plenty of opportunity for walking and fishing. Parachuting takes place at Clonbullogue, west of the town. There are some prehistoric cooking-places in the vicinity. The name Rathangan Rath Iomghain) means Iomghan's Fort, remains of which can still be seen in the town.

It is a quiet town on the bank of the Slate river and the Grand Canal providing pleasant waterside walks and coarse angling. A massive earthworks near the Protestant church was the site of an early Celtic fort, and a later Fitzgerald outpost. Writer Maura Laverty (1907-1966) was born here. It is also home to Big Brother contestant winner Brian Dowling.
